The Secretary General of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Cross River State chapter, Apostle Frank Umo has denied signing any document, endorsing the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party in the state.
Apostle Umo while speaking with selected journalists in Calabar described what happened at the PFN meeting on the day of the purpoted endorsement as a betrayal by the chairman of PFN, Rev. Lawrence Ekwok.
According to the clergy, neither did the minutes of the last meeting nor the agenda of the days meeting include the endorsement of any candidate
“ I feel very hurt over what happened and I feel really betrayed by the chairman. I am the secretary general of the PFN in the state and I can say authoritatively that at no point in either in our previous meeting nor in that days agenda did we ever discuss anything about endorsement. A committee was set-up to discuss with some governorship candidates, including Sen. Prince Bassey Edet Otu, Sen. Sandy Onor and Hon. Usani Usani, the chairman met with selected members of the advisory council, even as a member of that council, I was not even invited. Just about 12 people took a decision that more than 250 people are supposed to take, an action which cannot stand.
“on that day the chairman presented me with a committee report that is supposed to be deliberated by the general house and asked me to sign as the secretary general of which I did and he did not even give me a copy he went with both copies. When we got into the general meeting, I was shocked to hear the chairman mention that over 52 press men are around to witness tne press conference that we will have. I was surprised to see Sen. Sandy Onor and so many media houses. When he called on Sandy and all of that happened, at that point, I stood up and left the meeting because I could not sit there and watch what I and many others were not part of from the beginning
“I want to state categorically that I and I believe several others were never part of whatever happened there that day, regarding endorsing anyone, because even our national office has not permitted us to dabble into taking sides as far as politics is concern”
On Monday, 5th March, Rev. Lawrence Ekwok, whose tenure, this paper learnt had since elapsed, dragged the respected PFN into taking sides by purportedly endorsing the candidate of the PDP, Sandy Onor. The endorsement had since met with strong opposition with several church leaders coming out to condem the action of Mr. Ekwok
