Unmasking The Double-Faced Donald Duke, His Many Atrocities And How Ngozi Iweala Indicted Him. (PRT. 1)

Former governor of Cross River State, Mr. Donald Duke has been in the news recently for a wrong reason.

Mr. Duke who is now believed to be completely broke only recently had his expansive property in Lagos seized by AMCON after he could not pay up his debt.

In suit no, FHC/L/CS/1373/2019 filed before Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos State, the debt recovery agency of the Federal Government had posited that the bankrupt former governor failed to pay up his debt and therefore requested to take possession of his mansion situated in highbrow Ikoyi area of Lagos State as well as his United for Africa Bank accounts, Stonehedge Investment Limited and Onari Bob-Manuel Duke, his wife, were listed as first and third defendants in the suit.

In a desperate move for Mr. Duke to save himself the impending embarrassment, he visited governor Ben Ayade who was rumoured to have made the funds available to assist him pay off the N537M debt.

The benevolence of governor Ayade did not however go without the former governor who is referred to by many as ‘Play Boy’ visiting the Cross River Rice and seedlings factory to sing the praises of governor Ayade.

During the visit, Mr. Duke had described governor Ayade as the best governor ever. He advocated that governor Ayade should be considered for the Noble Prize award.

In his words “This rice facility, from what I have been told and what I have seen here, it can enable the entire West Africa sub-region to be self sufficient in rice. If that was all Ayade did, he has every right to beat his chest. If all he did was to ensure that the entire sub-region of West Africa is self sustaining in rice production, he will deserve a Nobel Prize for that.”

Today, the same Donald Duke, known for his double standard on public issues, is singing ba different tone.

Mr. Duke under whose administration saw state sponsored killings of high profile Cross Riverians including his own deputy, late John Oyom Okpa who died in a mysterious circumstance. His government failed to probe the event surrounding the killing of late Chief John Oyom Okpa and other prominent indigenes.

Apart from brutal state sponsored killings, Duke’s administration was also notorious for plunging the state into the deep waters of debt running into several billions of naira, making the smooth take off of his successor, Liyel Imoke extremely difficult.

When Duke wanted to launch the Calabar Women and Children hospital at the premises of the defunct National Republican Convention, NRC, Mr. Imoke was said to have directed then Police Commissioner to arrest the ‘Play Boy’ governor, insisting that he had questions to answer, especially surrounding debt burden of the state, illegal sales of state owned properties and land grabbing. Although Mr. Duke was arrested and driven to the State Police headquarters, nothing has been heard of the matter including the controversial sell of Metropolitan hotel at a ridiculous amount.

Perhaps one of the most painful episodes of the Donald Duke era as governor, was the controversial ceding of Bakassi peninsula to the republic of Cameroon. Several indigenes of Bakassi who dared to oppose the then state government’s unholy alliance with the federal government were secretly executed.

In 2019, Donald Duke who is not known to have any political followership attempted fruitlessly to become the nation’s president. He left the PDP through which he became governor between 1999 and 2007 to join the SDP. After long legal tussle with Prof. Jerry Gana, Mr. Duke was only able to secure 7 votes losing his own pulling unit at diamond hill, Calabar. Although he was also rumoured to have joined the APC, he has since returned to the PDP where apart from leading the campaign team aimed at destabilizing the zoning structure of the state, he now campaigns against his own people from the southern senatorial district.

Interestingly, it was the same Donald Duke who set up a committee that indicted the PDP governorship candidate, Sen. Sandy Onor while in office. Many believe that Mr. Duke is doing so against his own people for pecuniary reason of what he aims at getting from the oil rich Governor of Rivers state who has been a longtime friend of the PDP governorship candidate.

In her book, ‘Fighting Corruption Is Dangerous’ former Finance Minister, Ngozi Iweala noted with dismay how former governor Duke characteristically tried to deceive her not to take up an appointment as Finance Minister by the administration of President Good luck Jonathan.

“Governor Duke told me that there were rumours that I was told to return as Finance Minister. He asked if there was any truth in the rumours. I confirmed and said I was still reflecting on it. He then told me that he brought a message from ‘concerned citizens’ whose message was that I should turn down the offer. I asked him who are the concerned citizens where and what were their reasons for the advice. He would not give me the names…. I was shocked at the cynicism and asked that Nigerians had just elected president Jonathan with about 58.89 percent of the votes which meant that they had faith in the ability of the president to steer the country….he left without obtaining a commitment from me to turn down the offer “

Today, Donald Duke leads a campaign against his own people to block every attempt of having a governor from the southern region of the state with leadership ability to surpass his record in office, especially with his people accusing him of performing poorly in the area of human capital development of his own people.

Donald Duke, described by countless Cross Riverians as selfish and self-centered politician and one who has no interest of his community or people is notorious for stepping on so many toes while serving as governor, many of whom have also vowed to vehemently resist him if he dares to block the opportunity for a southerner emerging as governor of the state after 16 years of waiting.

Some concerned indigenes from the southern extraction of the state who did not want to be quotes said “in 1999 despite coming into town from Lagos with few shirts, trousers and a brief case with suspicious certificates written in latin. We had to collapse all structures and voted him as our own son. It is sad that he is now the one going against the same people who supported him. No wonder many say that he had long sold his soul to the devil” he said.

Mr. Duke whose wife is from Rivers state is rumoured to be an unofficial appointee of governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state, receiving several millions of naira as monthly subvention.
